Hibiscus - Postrocking [nsh059]

Published May 7, 2005

Sparse (yet finely detailed) sketches placing the bass guitar at the center of enchantingly cyclic atmospheres. Not so much post-rock, as its distilled essence.

Subject: tight work
somethin' akin to a mash of early american analog set and tsac's "the fawn"...dotted with throaty base and hollow kicks. i likes this much.

"second" "fourth" and "fifth" are all pensive meditation, while dual renditions of "sixth" suggest a lighter air ala "the fawn". "rekonstruction" is an odd choice here, and I'm not sure it fits. "second" is my fave, an ode to the moments in life one is most aware of existing. a very intimate song.

in sum, "postrocking" feels like the stripped down soundtrack to an elegiac indie film: earnest, playful, full of vulnerable yearning and, on occasion, awkward beauty.
